The 54th death anniversary of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh, the highest military awardee of Bangladesh, was observed with honour and solemnity on Friday in Nur Mohammad Nagar, Chandibarpur Union of Narail district.

The day’s events were organised by the Narail District Administration and began with the placing of floral wreaths at the portrait of Nur Mohammad Sheikh. The programme also included a rally, guard of honour, Qur’an recitation (Qurankhani), special prayers (Doa Mahfil), and a discussion meeting on his life and legacy.

These events were held at the Nur Mohammad Sheikh Memorial Museum and Library auditorium in his birthplace, Mahiskhola village—now renamed Nur Mohammad Nagar in his honour.

Sharmin Akhter Jahan, Deputy Commissioner of Narail, attended as the chief guest. Julia Sukaina, Deputy Director of Local Government, and Additional Police Superintendent Nur-E-Alom Siddique were also present as special guests.

Nur Mohammad Sheikh was born on 26 February 1936 in Mahiskhola village. He joined the East Pakistan Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) on the same date in 1959. He fought bravely in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 and was martyred on 5 September 1971 in Goalhati, Jashore, while fighting against the Pakistani army.
