BNP leader held over extortion, kidnapping in Khulna

The army has arrested a BNP leader from a hotel in Khulna city in connection with a case where a businessman was allegedly buried alive and extorted for Tk 2 crore in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore district.

The accused was Asaduzzaman Joni, secretary of Noapara Thana BNP. Later, his position was suspended after the case was filed on August 3.

On Thursday morning, he was handed over to the Abhaynagar Police Station in the presence of army personnel.

According to case details, the victim, Shahnewaz Kabir, alias Tipu, 48, is the owner of Jafridi Enterprise in the Noapara area.

On July 31, her wife, Asma Khatun, filed a written complaint at the Abhaynagar Rajghat army camp, stating that on September 2 of the previous year, around 10 AM, a man named Saikat Hossain, alias Hira, cunningly took her husband to the office of Asaduzzaman Joni.

There, Asaduzzaman allegedly beat him and held him at gunpoint, demanding Tk 2 crore. Asma Khatun then sent two crore taka to Asaduzzaman’s company account from a South Bengal Bank. After receiving the money, they released Shahnewaz Kabir.

Abhaynagar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Alim said, “We have received Joni. He is being interrogated at the police station.”
