According to Hindu mythology, Sri Krishna was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bangla month of Bhadra. Believed to incarnate in every age to protect the virtuous, vanquish the wicked, and uphold truth, justice, and beauty, his life and teachings continue to inspire millions.
The festival is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Shraban or Bhadra.
Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has extended greetings to members of the Hindu community on the occasion. The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.
Temples, religious organisations, and institutions across the country have prepared elaborate programmes. National newspapers will publish special articles, while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private broadcasters will air special programmes on Lord Krishna’s life and philosophy.
The Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee will hold the central celebration at the Dhakeshwari National Temple, beginning with a Geeta Joggo at 8:00am conducted by Shankar Math and Mission from Sitakunda, Chattogram.
A grand Janmashtami procession will set off at 3:00pm from Palashi intersection, to be inaugurated by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, and Bangladesh Army 9th Infantry Division GOC Major General Md Moin Khan will also be present.
The colourful procession will parade past Jagannath Hall, Shaheed Minar, Doyel Chattar, High Court intersection, Banga Bazar, and Golapshah Majar before concluding at Bahadur Shah Park.
On August 19, a discussion on Janmashtami will be held at the Dhakeshwari National Temple, with Primary and Mass Education Adviser Professor Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar as chief guest.
Separately, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has been holding a four-day celebration at Swamibagh Ashram in Dhaka since August 14, featuring Srimad Bhagavad Geeta recitations, devotional songs, vog arati, mahaprashad distribution, discussions, and cultural performances.
Janmashtami festivities will also take place at temples and ashrams nationwide.
