Four activists of the banned group Bangladesh Chhatra League have been beaten in Khagrachhari while putting up a poster of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

One of them is in critical condition.

The incident took place around midnight on Thursday in the Singinala area of the town, said Abdul Baten Mridha, chief (OC) of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station.

Hridoy Tripura, one of the injured activists, was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The identities of the other three have not been confirmed.

Police and witnesses said that 20 to 30 activists went to put up posters marking Sheikh Mujib’s 50th death anniversary late at night, which led to a heated argument with local residents.

Tensions flared when the group allegedly launched an attack on the villagers, prompting a swift and organised retaliation.

Army and police personnel, led by Khagrachhari Sadar Army Zone Commander Lt Col Khademul Islam, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and managed to restore order.

Ripol Bappy, residential medical officer at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, said that three injured were treated and sent home after first aid.

Hridoy’s condition was critical, so he was transferred to Chattogram for advanced treatment.

OC Baten confirmed the incident started over putting up posters and said the situation is now under control.
