Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Tuesday asked the force’s members to play a positive role during the general elections in February next year, saying that they did not have any preference for any party.

At a regular ‘Officers’ Address’ held at the Dhaka cantonment in the capital, he said that there should not be any reflection of partiality for any political party in their functions during the national polls.

Drawing the army chief’s attention to adverse criticism against them, some officers said that such criticism was affecting their morale with negative effects on their families as well, sources in the Bangladesh Army said.

Waker-Uz-Zaman called upon the force members to keep patient.

Without mentioning anyone’s name, he said that for being young, they were speaking so.

‘We have to keep patient. They are making such statements for being young and they would realise that when they will be grown up.’

Senior officials in Dhaka joined the event in person while others joined virtually.

The interim government chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has already announced that the next general elections would be held in February 2026 before the Arabic month of Ramadan, which will begin in the third week of February.
