The government of Bangladesh has formally drawn the attention of the Indian authorities to reports of the establishment of offices by the banned political party, Bangladesh Awami League, in New Delhi and Kolkata, calling the development a serious violation of bilateral trust and an affront to the sovereignty of the Bangladeshi state.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an statement on Wednesday, August 20, amid growing concerns over increasing anti-Bangladesh activities being orchestrated from Indian soil by senior leaders of the outlawed party, many of whom are absconding in connection with grave criminal charges, including crimes against humanity, in Bangladesh.
On the evening of July 21, 2025, a group of senior leaders linked to the banned party attempted to hold a public outreach event at the Delhi Press Club under the guise of an unidentified non-governmental organisation. During the event, they reportedly distributed propaganda booklets to members of the media, attempting to present a distorted narrative about the current political situation in Bangladesh.
Multiple reports in Indian media outlets have since highlighted a noticeable uptick in political overtures by the group, including the operational presence of offices allegedly functioning as coordination hubs for the banned party’s activities.
The government of Bangladesh strongly condemned these developments, stating that any political activity by Bangladeshi nationals, especially those wanted in serious criminal cases, aimed at destabilising Bangladesh while based in India constitutes a clear breach of international norms and bilateral goodwill.
“Allowing the establishment of offices and the conduct of political campaigns by a banned organisation on Indian soil is not only an affront to the people and institutions of Bangladesh but also undermines the spirit of mutual respect and trust that underpins our bilateral relations,” said a senior government official.
The Bangladeshi government further warned that such actions could jeopardise the ongoing political transformation in the country and stir public sentiment, potentially affecting the broader relationship between the two neighbouring nations, which share deep cultural, economic, and strategic ties.
In light of these developments, Dhaka has formally urged the Government of India to take immediate and decisive action to: Prevent any and all anti-Bangladesh activities by Bangladeshi nationals on Indian territory; prohibit the operation of any political offices linked to the banned Bangladesh Awami League; ensure no support, direct or indirect, is extended to such activities; and immediately shut down any existing offices being used for political mobilisation against Bangladesh.
The government iterated its commitment to maintaining peaceful, cooperative, and respectful relations with India, but stressed that such ties must be built on reciprocity, non-interference, and respect for sovereignty.
Bangladesh remains vigilant and will continue to take all necessary diplomatic and legal measures to safeguard its national interests and constitutional order.
