Nassa Group, one of Bangladesh’s leading garment manufacturers, is set to permanently close 16 of its factories after failing to sustain operations due to severe financial and other crises.

The move, finalised through a tripartite agreement, affects more than 12,500 workers and marks one of the largest single shutdowns in the country’s ready-made garment sector.

An agreement confirming the closures was signed at a tripartite meeting held on Tuesday to resolve ongoing labour unrest.

The meeting was chaired by Arif Ahmed Khan, Additional Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), at its head office in Srama Bhaban, Dhaka.

Representatives of workers, factory management, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, the industrial police, the Bangladesh Army, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) were present at the meeting.

According to the agreement between Nassa Group management and workers, the 16 factories will be officially declared closed today (Thursday).

Under the deal, factory authorities will pay workers’ wages for August and September 2025 by October 15 and October 30respectively.

A source present at the meeting confirmed that the closure of 16 out of Nassa Group’s 25 units was in line with labour law provisions.

It was estimated that around Tk 2.0 billion will be required to clear outstanding wages and allowances for some 12,500 workers and employees for the two months of August and September 2025.

This amount also covers notice pay, service benefits, and maternity leave entitlements where applicable. The source added that the group will sell a property in Gulshan to raise funds for paying dues.

As per the agreement, workers will also receive 30 days’ basic pay as notice pay, 30 days’ service benefit for each completed year of employment, maternity leave benefits in accordance with labour law, and all other lawful entitlements by 30 November.

The agreement further stipulates that no workers will be blacklisted through the national database, while the government will take legal action against factory authorities if they fail to comply with the decisions.
