Speaking at a special law and order meeting at the Khagrachhari District Administration’s conference room on Sunday, he urged strict administrative measures to maintain order and prevent further casualties or damage to property.
“All communities must stand together to overcome the situation,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandaker presided over the meeting, which was convened to assess the security crisis.
Authorities have deployed the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police across the district and imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari municipality, Sadar upazila, and Guimara upazila, prohibiting public gatherings. Residents have been advised to stay indoors unless in emergencies.
Meanwhile, an indefinite road blockade—now in its second day—has brought transport to a standstill. Enforced by Jumma students and local residents, the blockade demands the arrest of all perpetrators, compensation for the victim’s family, and justice for those allegedly assaulted during protests.
The situation deteriorated further on Sunday evening when an armed attack in Guimara Upazila left three people dead and several others injured.
The unrest stems from the September 23 rape of a schoolgirl in the Singinala area of Khagrachhari Sadar. Her father filed a case against three unidentified suspects.
Acting on a tip-off, police, assisted by the army, arrested a suspect, Shayan Shil, the following day.
