Nasirpur Canal reopens to Khulna people after three decades

Nasirpur Canal, which flows over about ten kilometers, is the ‘lifeline’ of tens of thousands of people at 20 villages at Paikgachha of Khulna. On Wednesday, the upazila administration there formally opened the canal from Taltala to Haridhali at Paikgachha of Khulna. On June 30, at last meeting of the Jalmahal Lease Committee, the announcement was made to open Nasirpur Canal.

Anwar Aldeen, a well-known journalist and philanthropist of Paikgachha-Koira area, had committed to make free Nasirnagar Khal for people. Anwar, chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha-BSS, plays relentless roles in development.

Opening the canal invited festive presence of thousands of people, including men and women, of the area. Earlier, all obstacles were removed with coordination of the Army and Police personnel. Signboards were installed at various places and people regained their full rights over the canal after three decades. So, Wednesday was a different day for the people of Taltala, Chinamla, Goalbathan, Pratapkathi, Khola, Kazimusha, Rezakpur, Kashimnagar, Kanaidanga, Kapilmuni, Haridhali, Salua Srirampur, Hauli, Nasirpur, Ramnagar, Mahmudkathi.

Whose food supply and livelihood depend on the canal are now delighted and they distributed sweets among villagers, homes and markets.

Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mr. Mohammad Saiful Islam implemented rescue and opening the canal. Upazila Assistant Commissioner Bhumi Md. Iftekharul Islam Shamim, Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Saikat Mallik, Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Ekramul Hossain, assisted the DC.

Shahadat Hossain Dablu, former chairman of Kapilmuni Union Parishad, and Awami League leader had been illegally occupying the Khal for a long time, He used to cultivate fishes for his profits and depriving villagers.
