The formal commercial operation of the dual pipeline set up at the cost of Tk 3,600 crore (approximately US$420 million) is likely to begin before August 15, BPC sources said.
Meanwhile, the BPC and Padma Oil Company Ltd have already completed all types of tests and commissioning of the pipeline.
Currently, Padma Oil is transporting its fuel through the pipeline to its Dhaka installations.
The 24 Engineer Construction Brigade of the Bangladesh Army has implemented the project funded by BPC. The Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war contributed to delay and cost escalation of the project.
BPC sources confirmed that the implementing organization 24 Engineer Construction Brigade of the Bangladesh Army will hand over the project to the funding authorities Padma Oil Company Ltd this month.
The Padma Oil Company will also hand over it to the BPC and then BPC will hand it over to the Petroleum Transportation Company Ltd, (PTC PLC) after August 15.
The pipeline is capable to transporting 5.4 million tonnes of diesel per year for 25 years without any major disorder. The capital requires only 2.7 million tonnes of fuel oil per year.
The 250km long pipeline from Chattogram to Dhaka to transport over 27 lakh tonnes of Diesel (High Speed Diesel-HSD).
The HSD is one of the most important fuel for agricultural work in the northern districts of the country.
The BPC had taken the project for supplying diesel from Chattogram to Dhaka in an attempt to check pilferage and ensure its quick supply.
Currently, from Godnail and Fatullah in Narayanganj, oil tankers usually transport oil through waterways to the depots in the country’s northern areas including Baghabari (Pabna), Chilmari (Kurigram) and north-western Chachna Bazar (Sunamganj).
The 237.71km 16-inch diameter pipeline had been installed from BPC’s Chattogram tank terminal at Padma Oil Installations at Patenga to Godnail tank terminal in Narayanganj.
Besides, the BPC installed another 8.29km 10-inch diameter pipeline from Godnail to Fatullah in Narayanganj to carry oil.
