Golden reign of Ansar comes to an end as Army claims the throne

With a commanding haul of 16 gold medals, the Bangladesh Army has emerged as the overall champion of the 18th National Wushu Championship 2025, held at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka recently.

The event marked the end of a sixteen-year reign by the Ansar & VDP team, which this time settled for the first runners-up position with seven golds to their name.

Dinajpur District clinched three golds to secure the second runners-up spot, while Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) claimed a solitary gold to finish fourth.

The grand finale and award-giving ceremony took place on Sunday, graced by the presence of Li Shaopeng, Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, who served as the chief guest and handed out prizes to the champions.

The closing ceremony was presided over by the esteemed President of the Bangladesh Wushu Federation, Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman, AWC, AFWC, PSC, G.

Dildar Hasan Dilu, the founding General Secretary of Bangladesh Wushu, and representatives from various participating organisations were there.

This year’s championship witnessed participation from 28 teams, comprising approximately 418 athletes, coaches, and officials from institutions such as the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Police, Ansar and VDP, and Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP).

A total of 27 gold-medal events were contested, 19 in the Sanda category and 8 in the Taolu category. In all, 108 medals (gold, silver, and bronze) were awarded.

As a special incentive, each gold medal winner received an attractive electronic gift sponsored by PRAN-RFL Group, adding a touch of glamour to the medal tally. Team champions were presented with trophies, while all participants received commemorative T-shirts and certificates in recognition of their spirited efforts.

Looking ahead, the Bangladesh Wushu Federation has announced the commencement of a residential training camp from the first of August at the Mirpur Sports Village. The camp will prioritise gold and silver medallists from the tournament, with the aim of scouting and grooming promising talents for future international competitions.
