Tarique led Bangladesh to ‘fascism-free’ era: Rezaul

BNP Executive Committee Member and former State Minister Professor Md. Rezaul Karim has claimed that Bangladesh has been “freed from fascism” through a mass uprising led by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from abroad.

Speaking at a public event held at Sonmandi, Sonargaon, Karim credited Tarique Rahman with providing strategic leadership during the political upheaval in July, asserting that a united movement of students, citizens, and party activists brought about the fall of the previous government.

“From London, Tarique Rahman guided a nationwide resistance that ended the authoritarian rule of Sheikh Hasina,” he said. “On August 5, she was forced to flee to India.”

The claim that Sheikh Hasina fled the country remains unverified. Independent media and official sources have not confirmed her departure, and the Awami League has repeatedly dismissed such allegations as baseless and politically driven.

Karim described the events of July as a “people’s victory” and expressed confidence that a “new Bangladesh” could emerge under Tarique Rahman’s proposed 31-point reform agenda.

“If implemented, this roadmap will transform Bangladesh into a prosperous, democratic, and globally respected nation,” he said.

The gathering marked the one-year anniversary of what the BNP calls the “student-people’s victory” — its term for the anti-government protests that culminated in the collapse of the Awami League-led regime.

The event included special prayers (fateha) for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who remains under medical supervision.

The program was presided over by Nurul Amin Bhuiyan, Vice-President of Sonmandi Union BNP.
