Google Alert – Bangladesh Army
The Army traced the unrest back to rising tensions following the murder of a motorcyclist named Mamun in September 2024. It accused the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and affiliated groups of inciting communal clashes in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, leading to deaths, injuries, and widespread lawlessness.
The statement outlined a series of provocative acts by UPDF activists, including protests, strikes, online inflammatory content, road blockades, attacks on security personnel, and firing upon civilians. Despite attempts by security forces to respond with restraint, the situation escalated to violent clashes, resulting in injuries to soldiers and civilians, property damage, and the imposition of Section 144.
The Army highlighted efforts to destabilize the region by forcing women and children into disruptive activities and smuggling indigenous weapons, including a recent seizure of arms at a BGB checkpoint.
Calling the violence part of a coordinated conspiracy, the Army urged political leaders and the public to exercise restraint and cooperate with law enforcement to restore peace. The Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty and the safety of all communities in the Hill Tracts amid ongoing challenges of misinformation and provocation.
