Bangladesh Army Secures Land for New Defence Manufacturing Facility in Chattogram

In a significant move towards bolstering indigenous defence production, the Bangladesh Army is set to establish a new state-owned weapons manufacturing complex in Salimpur, Chattogram. The proposed site, measuring 54.99 acres, lies just 62 kilometres from the Indian border, in a location considered strategically important due to its proximity to key military and logistical infrastructure. The land, formerly owned by Jalil Textile Mills under the Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC), is being handed over to the Army as part of a symbolic financial arrangement. Jalil Textile owes substantial outstanding payments, including utility bills, and the land transfer comes in lieu of those unpaid dues. The government has formally approved the allocation of the land to the Bangladesh Army for the express purpose of setting up the country’s second major military-industrial installation.
