The interim government has called on the Indian government to take urgent steps to stop activities of the Awami League leaders and activists operating from Indian soil, describing them as “anti-Bangladesh”.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged New Delhi to ensure that no Bangladeshi citizen conducts anti-state operations from within India.
The statement emphasised that any such activity should receive no approval or support, and demanded the “immediate closure” of one or more Awami League offices operating in India.
The ministry highlighted reports of plans to establish Awami League offices in India’s capitals, New Delhi and Kolkata, noting that the information was confirmed through Indian media.
“Any form of political activity campaigning against the interests of Bangladesh by Bangladeshi nationals, particularly by the absconding leaders/activists of a banned political party, staying on Indian soil, legally or illegally, including the establishment of offices is an unambiguous affront against the people and State of Bangladesh,” the statement read.
“This development also risks upholding the good-neighbourly relations with India driven by mutual trust and mutual respect, and lends serious implications for the political transformation under way in Bangladesh,” the ministry warned.
The statement added that many senior leaders of the outlawed party, facing charges for serious crimes against humanity in Bangladesh, are currently in India.
It cited a Jul 21 incident in which senior party figures, posing under the cover of an NGO, reportedly organised a public event at the Press Club of India in Delhi, distributing leaflets to journalists.
