Bangladesh has officially stepped into the 5G era, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s digital transformation.

Robi Axiata became the first mobile network operator in the country to commercially launch 5G services, unveiling the next-generation network during a formal ceremony at its corporate office in Dhaka on Monday.

The launch was attended by Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, who described the occasion as a major leap forward for Bangladesh’s digital future.

“5G is more than just faster internet—it’s a gateway to new opportunities in economic growth, employment, education, healthcare, and smart city development,” Tayyab said. “This moment marks a significant stride toward building a digitally empowered nation.”

Robi’s 5G network is now live in select high-traffic areas across three major cities including Fakirapul (Paltan), Dhaka, Dhaka University (Shahbagh), Moghbazar intersection, Dhaka, Khulshi, Chattogram and Sagar Dighi Par, Sylhet.

Customers with 5G-enabled devices can already access high-speed connectivity in these zones. Robi plans to expand its 5G coverage progressively across urban and rural regions in the coming months.

M. Riaz Rashid, Acting CEO of Robi Axiata PLC, credited the swift rollout to strong government support and forward-looking policies.

“This commercial launch is a crucial step in building a resilient digital economy. We are proud to bring the future of connectivity to our users and position Bangladesh on the global tech map,” Rashid said.

Robi is working closely with global technology leaders Ericsson and Huawei to develop a scalable, secure, and sustainable nationwide 5G ecosystem, laying the foundation for innovations in IoT, automation, and smart infrastructure.

In a swift follow-up, Grameenphone (GP)—the country’s largest telecom operator—announced the launch of its own 5G services. In a video message, GP CEO Yasir Azman confirmed that 5G activation is underway in all divisional cities.

“We’re proud to bring 5G to our customers across Bangladesh. This is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a transformative leap in connectivity, innovation, and digital inclusion,” Azman said.

Grameenphone aims to ensure broad, reliable, and inclusive access to 5G, supporting both urban innovation and rural development.

Major General (Retd.) Md. Emdad ul Bari, Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), welcomed the launch as a “new horizon” for the telecom sector.

“The arrival of 5G opens immense possibilities. We expect operators to deploy this technology responsibly, ensuring equitable access and maximizing benefits for all citizens,” he said.

With multi-gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency, and support for massive device connectivity, 5G is set to revolutionize critical sectors, including telemedicine and remote healthcare, services, smart cities and intelligent transportation systems, cloud gaming, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR), digital education and e-learning platforms, and agriculture, logistics, and industrial automation.

The advancements are expected to accelerate the country’s journey toward a fully digital economy, aligning with the national vision of Digital Bangladesh 2041.
