Chattogram City Mayor and former President of the Metropolitan BNP, Dr Shahadat Hossain, stated that on this day in 1978, the martyred President Ziaur Rahman founded the BNP. The BNP, which progressed with a nineteen-point programme, won the parliamentary elections the following year. Since its establishment, the BNP has governed the country four times. It is a liberal democratic political party. Just as the people appreciated the BNP in the past, everyone must now work to earn that appreciation once more. BNP leaders and activists must become ideal political representatives. The BNP will return to power in the next election with the support of the people. Bangladesh will rise again under the leadership of the BNP.
He made these remarks while laying a wreath at the Biplob Bedi in memory of Shaheed Zia at Biplob Udyan, near Gate No. 2 in Sholoshahar, on Monday afternoon, on the occasion of the 47th founding anniversary of the BNP.
He said that Shaheed Ziaur Rahman united the people of Bangladesh and gave priority to the development and democracy of the country. That is why the people of this nation accepted Ziaur Rahman as their leader. After he was assassinated by a group of rogue army officers in 1981, Begum Khaleda Zia took over the leadership of the BNP. Under her leadership, the BNP formed the government three times.
He noted that the BNP faced a significant political crisis following the emergency in 2007. The Awami League has suppressed the BNP for a decade and a half. Begum Khaleda Zia was imprisoned for two years in what he described as a false case. However, the BNP has never compromised on its stance regarding democracy.
Dr Shahadat asserted that the BNP has never retreated from the promises made to the people. From the declaration of independence in 1971, to the founding of the political party by Shaheed Zia, state governance, the return to the parliamentary system, and up to 5 August 2024, the BNP has always upheld democratic values. Following the fall of the Hasina government during the student uprising, BNP leaders and activists have been reinvigorated. The entire country is now awaiting the return of acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
