An attack on a general meeting at the Satkhira Press Club, involving correspondents from DBC News and Bangladesh Betar, among others, has left at least 10 journalists injured.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon, prompting a security deployment by both police and Army personnel outside the press club, said Satkhira Police Station chief (OC) Shamimul Islam.

The injured include Abul Kashem, a Bangladesh Betar journalist and a factional president of the press club, Belal Hossain from DBC News, Aminur Rahman of Bhorer Akash, Abul Kalam from Mukto Swadhin, Sohrab Hossain of Dainik Onirban, Asaduzzaman, Toufiqul Rahman Litu, Sohrab Sobuj, Rezaul Islam Bablu, and Ramzan, identified with a single name.

All have been admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Kashem said, “We were peacefully preparing for a meeting at the press club. At that moment, a group led by journalists Abu Sayeed and Abdul Bari launched an attack on us.

“At least 30 journalists were injured.”

Asaduzzaman, the district correspondent for Banglavision and BSS, said: “Abu Sayeed and Abdul Bari have long maintained illegal and undemocratic control of the press club.

“Anyone opposing them faces attacks and torture.”

Attempts to reach Sayeed and Bari, respectively president and general secretary of the rival faction, were unsuccessful.

The attack has sparked outrage among local journalists, who are calling for the immediate arrest of those involved and for justice to be served without delay.

OC Shamimul said the situation at the press club remained tense following the incident.

Police have been deployed in the area to maintain control, and Army personnel are also present, he added.
