Backed by the patronage of the Jaj Bhuiyan Group, Wednesday’s final meets bore witness to some thrilling bouts and a few uncontested triumphs at Mohammad Ali Boxing Stadium in Dhaka.
Out of the 24 events in the men’s and women’s divisions, 11 finals were held on the day, eight for the men and three for the women, with familiar faces claiming gold with display of stamina and power.
In the men’s division, the Bangladesh Army reigned supreme, sweeping most of the titles. In the 51kg category, Tariqul Islam overcame Russell Kabir Shubho of Rajshahi City Boxing Club. In the 60kg division, Belal Hossain defeated Sudipto Talukder of Rangamati District Sports Association, while in the 63.5kg bout, Hossain Ali bested Al Sani of Ansar.
Selim Hossain outclassed Khulna’s Imon Mehedi Hasan in the 67kg match-up, and in the 71kg category, Saurav Najatul Islam emerged victorious against Dinajpur’s Tamim Bhuiyan. Jewel Ahmed of Ansar stood tall in the 80kg division, defeating Tahedul Islam of Barguna’s Gaurichanna Boxing Club.
Meanwhile, in the 86kg clash, Shuvo Kumar Bhadhuri bested Rajshahi’s Mehedi Rana Kamal, and in the over-92kg heavyweight category, Mehedi Hasan brought home another gold for the Army by beating Rajshahi’s Kaiyum Ali.
In the women’s events, the Army continued their golden run. Kayma Khatun bagged gold in the 50kg category, outpunching Rahima of Ansar.
In the 70kg and over-80kg divisions, however, it was a walk in the park, Anita Islam and Asma Khatun, both representing the Army, clinched gold medals without lifting a glove, as their would-be opponents bowed out in the semi-finals. Consequently, only gold, and bronze medals will be awarded in those categories.
The ring will once again come alive on Thursday as the remaining 13 finals are to be unfold with more glory, grit, and gold on the line.
