Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today highlighted the crucial role of cooperation with China in driving Bangladesh’s economic transformation.

Speaking at the Dhaka-China Day 2025 event held at North South University, Farida said, “Social and economic development will be possible by increasing the competitiveness of Bangladesh and China.”

She noted that the Chief Adviser visited China on March 26, 2025, where several agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed to enhance economic and technical cooperation. These agreements will strengthen collaboration across diverse sectors including culture, media, sports, and health.

Farida stressed the importance of this cooperation for Bangladesh’s youth, who make up more than half of the country’s population and serve as the main drivers of change.

Focusing on the fisheries and livestock sector, she said that through the combined efforts of fishermen, workers, traders, importers, exporters, researchers, and scientists, Bangladesh has become nearly self-sufficient in fish, meat, and egg production. Moreover, fish and fish products are not only meeting domestic demand but are also being exported globally.

She praised China as a long-standing and reliable trading partner, with ties growing stronger by the day. Looking ahead, Farida said Bangladesh-China cooperation could open new opportunities in fisheries and livestock, including investment in aquaculture technology, modern production methods, climate-resilient animal housing, disease control, antimicrobial resistance management, modernization of fish landing and processing centers, and development of dried fish and value-added industries.

“This cooperation will further strengthen the country’s food security and economic growth,” she added.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen remarked that the Dhaka-China Day event reflects the close bond between the two countries. He said the activities showcasing Chinese culture help foster understanding and connection between the peoples of Bangladesh and China.

Highlighting the historic nature of the current Bangladesh-China relationship, Yao said both nations are progressing hand in hand in development and other sectors.

The event featured remarks from Benazir Ahmed, founding life member and board of trustees member of NSU Trust. NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury chaired the discussion, which was attended by diplomats, academicians, researchers, businessmen, and students from both Bangladesh and China.
