Army officials arrested a man from the restaurant of Sagar Nibas Resort in Cox’s Bazar for impersonating a retired army major and committing fraud on Wednesday evening.

The arrested was identified as Md. Asifur Rahman, son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Paschim Medda village in Brahmanbaria Sadar.

A patrol team of the 9 East Bengal Regiment under the 2 Infantry Brigade carried out the operation based on intelligence reports.

According to the army officials, Asif had long been posing as a retired major to secure personal benefits. At the time of arrest, he was demanding a 20 per cent discount on his meal by using the false identity. Earlier in April, he had stayed at the resort for three days under the same guise and even used a driver in FS Court uniform as a bodyguard.

During initial questioning, Asif introduced himself as co-editor of the national daily Sorejomin and claimed he had served in the BNCC in 2014. He also allegedly forced his second wife to accompany him to Cox’s Bazar through threats and legal pressure.

Army sources said that Asif had previously taken advantage of his fake identity at other facilities, including the army-operated ‘Bay Watch’ hotel.

He was later handed over to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station for legal action.
