The local administration this afternoon imposed section 144 in Chattogram’s Hathazari area following repeated clashes between local residents and students of Chittagong University.
The section 144 will remain in effect from 2:00pm today till 12:00am Tuesday in the surrounding areas of the campus and a part of the upazila, said Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Abdullah Al Mumin.
Chattogram Additional District Magistrate Mahbubul Haque told The Daily Star that the section 144 was imposed at noon to avoid further violence in the area.
He said police and army personnel had been deployed at the scene.
The development came after a fresh clash broke out between CU students and local residents around noon today, as a sequel to tensions stemming from an earlier confrontation. A scuffle broke out between Chittagong University students and locals around midnight, following the alleged assault of a female student by a security guard near the university’s Gate No. 2.
When asked, CU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Kamal Uddin said, “Section 144 had been imposed to restore law and order on campus, and the army has already been deployed.”
Our correspondent reported that around 3:00pm, many students were spotted carrying sticks and sharp weapons. Villagers were attacking students with sticks and sharp weapons as well. Several injured students were rescued and taken to the medical centre of the university.
