Hill Voice on Facebook
Suhas Chakma not a human rights activist, rather a violator and litigious
Hill Voice, 7 August 2025, Special Correspondent: Suhas Chakma has been targeting Chakma community leaders and student leaders in order to silence them using muscle power and money power. He has filed at lease 16 court cases including legal notices in his name against top Chakma community leaders of Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh since 2021 and at least a hundred Chakma leaders have been prosecuted in his court cases. His victims included the Pradhan Samajpati (Chieftain) of the Chakma community of Tripura, NGO leaders, Village headmen, and student leaders.
If someone says something against Suhas Chakma, criticizes any of his roles, Suhas Chakma immediately files a defamation case against him in court and issues a new legal notice. The main goal of filing the cases is that no one dares to speak against him. He claims to be a human rights activist. But he does not believe in the freedom of speech and expression of others. As a result, whenever someone says something against him, he immediately files a defamation case without considering anything. He even demands a large amount of compensation.
Many Chakma leaders who have been the victims of his case have said that he is not a human rights activist, but a human rights violator and litigious. Chakma leaders in Tripura, Arunachal and Mizoram, India, have been subjected to more human rights violations by Suhas Chakma than any other state or non-state actors.
For instances, General Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh Chapter of the Chakma National Council of India (CNCI), Arunjit Chakma, had uploaded a video in Facebook and requested Suhas Chakma not to spread false information to mislead the public of Arunachal Pradesh. Such request is covered under right to freedom of speech and expression under Art 19(1)(a) of Constitution. Despite claiming himself to be a human rights defender, Suhas Chakma could not tolerate and issued legal notice to Arunjit and demanded huge money as compensation.
On 8 June 2022, Suhas Chakma served a legal notice to 12 office bearers/advisors of Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students Union (APCSU) i.e. (1) Drishya Muni Chakma, (2) Nunez Chakma, (3) Sonjit Chakma, (4) Chikond Chand Chakma, (5) Ratan Samir Chakma, (6) Atul P Chakma, (7) Nipen Chakma, (8) Uttam Chakma, (9) Supon Chakma, (10) Sangha Mitra Chakma, (11) Ajay Sen Chakma, (12) Rakesh Talukdar for a story published in The Sentinel newspaper about the violation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) by Suhas Chakma during his visit to Arunachal Pradesh in May 2022. Later, he filed a Civil Suit No. 3906/2022 against these student leaders at a Delhi district court demanding Rs. 14 lakh compensation.
On 20 January 2023, over 68 traditional village heads of the Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Gaon Burah Council (i.e. association of the village councils) and prominent Chakma intellectuals wrote a joint letter to Suhas Chakma asking him to refrain from interfering into the Chakma related issues of Arunachal Pradesh. The letter stated that Suhas was spreading of misinformation and thereby complicating the problem. The letter also stated that Suhas Chakma was only sensationalizing the issues and distorting facts and creating fear and complicating the problems which is not helping the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh. After that, Suhas Chakma himself published the letter in Facebook and issued legal notice against them claiming that he has been defamed!
Suhas Chakma issued legal notice against Debjan Chakma, Shanti Bikash Chakma and Bibha Basu Chakma, top leaders of Tripura Rejyo Chakma Samajik Parishad. Suhas Chakma issued this legal notice because the said leaders asked him not to interfere unnecessarily in the matter of Chakma customary law.
Besides, Suhas served legal notices to three Chakma leaders in Tripura – Darbacha Chakma, Dhanud Dhar Chakma and Mangal Dhan Chakma, demanding Rs 30 lakh compensation from them. He has filed a case against them in Delhi court.
Suhas Chakma often verbally threatens people with filing cases and losing their government jobs. These lawsuits and threats by Suhas Chakma are not constructive social activities or protecting the human rights of the people, but an attempt to harass the people of the Chakma community, violate their human rights, and create disunity and instability in the society.
