An attack occurred at a protest rally organized by the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) in Khagrachari. It has been reported that the attack was carried out by the Bangladesh Army-backed vigilantes. Several people were reported injured in the incident.
The UPDF organized the protest rally at Chengi Square in Khagrachari town to mark the one year since the fall of the Fascist Sheikh Hasina regime. The rally called for the government to concede to the full autonomy demand of the Jumma people and initiate the process of a permanent solution to the Chittagong Hill Tracts problem.
Around 10:30 AM, a procession began from the Khagrachari Sadar Upazila Parishad grounds, which proceeded toward Chengi Square. Upon reaching the square, the vigilantes attacked the participants in the rally. Several individuals were injured, although their identities have not yet been confirmed.
According to allegations, the attackers first used slingshots, followed by gunfire.
During the attack, police and administrative officials remained completely inactive. They did not take any action against the attackers.
Earlier in the day, the vigilantes reportedly obstructed people coming to the rally in areas such as Dighinala, Zero Mile in Khagrachari Sadar, and Dewan Para in Bhaibonchhara, turning away vehicles carrying attendees.
